As illustrated in a new Zpryme INFOgraphic sponsored by eMeter, A Siemens Business a survey of 260 utility industry executives across the Smart Grid industry reveal that 29 percent consider the top power utility business challenge to be addressed by data analytics is “power outage analysis,” while nearly half (47%) believe utilities are not prepared to handle the “data explosion from smart grid technologies.”

Titled “2013 Utility Data Analytics Survey,” the INFOgraphic explores overall executive smart grid sentiment on how big data is shaping the future grid and impacting the way utilities today are processing the endless procession of smart meter data. While digitizing the smart grid continues to be an ambitious undertaking around the globe, the deluge of data is full of value soon to be realized.

“Analytics drive intelligent investments, higher customer satisfaction, and a more sustainable future. That’s worth more than dollars to today’s utility – it means staying relevant in a changing world.” said Larsh Johnson, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, eMeter, A Siemens Business.

“Based on the eMeter, A Siemens Business survey, almost a third of utility industry executive respondents cited “power outage analysis” as the most critical pain point that data analytics can help resolve,” said Jason S. Rodriguez, CEO & Director of Research, Zpryme. “Traditionally utilities collect one meter reading at a time. With smart meters, utilities will report and monitor customer usage information at an exponential rate. Data analytic solutions from companies such as eMeter have an important role in helping utilities around the world not only learn more about customer energy usage, but also bounce back more efficiently from blackout events such as Hurricane Sandy in the U.S. last year.”

Zpryme executive survey data also showed:

  • 48% of executives believe that “distribution systems” are the utility system to benefit most from data.
  • 35% of executives consider “benchmarks” the most important for industry wide application.
  • 47% of executives say that “detecting outages and faults” the highest for outage data analytics.
