As illustrated in the INFOgraphic, 2014 Smart Grid Cybersecurity Survey, sponsored by SMART Modular Technologies, a survey of 111 energy executives revealed that 61 percent considered security to currently be a big problem for the smart grid; more poignantly 64 percent believed that the grid is not prepared for security threats.
“While significant advancements have been made over the past decade to support energy availability and continuity, the results of our survey confirm the industry’s next big investment focus should be security, data integrity, and reliability of smart grid systems,” stated Scott Emley, SMART Modular Technologies VP & GM, Integrated Memory Solutions. “The challenge is upon the entire smart grid ecosystem, from suppliers to OEMs to utility companies to regulators and even to consumers, to embrace a concerted security direction and efficiently protect these advancements.”
“With cybersecurity and the smart grid increasingly becoming more dependent on one another the failure to address security ricks across the grid will have major repercussions,” stated Jason S. Rodriguez, Zpryme CEO and Director of Research. “That’s why it’s important to have companies such as SMART Modular producing technologies for a safer, more-reliable grid.”
Zpryme’s executive survey also revealed:
- Nearly four out of ten (38%) believed that “government standards” are the best way to remedy smart grid security concerns.
- Almost one out of ten (8%) utilities planned to invest “more than $5 million” in cybersecurity technologies over the next five years.
- Respondents ranked outages as the biggest concern as it pertains smart grid security.
- Outages were also ranked as the most severe consequence of a potential security breach at a utility.
- Three out of ten (30%) stated that “distribution automation” will yield the largest amount of investment over the next year.
