Summary
The purpose of this monthly report is to track consumer interests in electric vehicles (EVs) and identify key insights based on age, U.S. region, and gender. This report further identifies major barriers facing consumers as it relates to their interest in purchasing an EV. Last, the data provide consumer perceptions about whether they view their utility as a key source of information for EVs. The data in this report was collected at the end of March 2021.

The data and graphics in this report are from Zpryme’s monthly and quarterly consumer benchmarking surveys. Data is based upon a nationally representative survey sample of 1,000 U.S. adults (margin of error: +/- 3.5%).
Highlights
- Slightly over one-third (33.6%) of the youngest age group (18-24) reported that they were likely to purchase an EV over the next 12 months—by far the largest proportion of any age group. The least likely to buy were those 65 and over (87.6%).
- Being too expensive was the top-rated reason for not buying/leasing an EV, with battery life of EV models in second place.
- The youngest group of respondents (18-24 years old) were the most likely (37.2%) to seek information from their utilities about EVs. Those living in the northeast had the highest likelihood (20.5%) of seeking EV information from their utilities.
