Summary

The purpose of this quarterly report is to track consumer usage of digital payment apps such as Venmo and Cash App and to identify the top expenses consumers are paying with digital payment apps. The results of the analysis are presented by age, U.S. region, and gender. The data in this report were collected at the end of March 2021.

The data and graphics in this report are from Zpryme’s monthly and quarterly consumer benchmarking surveys. Data is based upon a nationally representative survey sample of 1,000 U.S. adults (margin of error: +/- 3.5%).

Highlights

  • This March 2021 report reflected that the top three payment methods were: debit cards (30.2%), credit cards (30.0%), and cash (28.3%).  Only 4.6% of respondents reported mobile apps as their most preferred method of payment.
  • Cash was used most often by 18–24-year-olds (33.6%); checks most often by those 65+ (10.1%); mobile apps most often by those 45-54 (8.7%).
  • Mobile apps were most often used to pay for food, drink, groceries (16.0%) and utilities (9.6%).  The age group that was the biggest user of mobile apps was 25-34 years old (56.5%).  Generally, the older consumers get, the less often mobile apps were used.
