Summary

The purpose of this monthly report is to track consumer interests in electric vehicles (EVs) and identify key insights based on age, U.S. region, and gender. This report further identifies major barriers facing consumers as it relates to their interest in purchasing an EV. Lastly, the data provides consumer perceptions about whether they view their utility as a key source of information for EVs. The data in this report was collected at the end of October 2021.

The data and graphics in this report are from Zpryme’s monthly and quarterly consumer benchmarking surveys. Data is based upon a nationally representative survey sample of 1,000 U.S. adults (margin of error: +/- 3.5%).

Highlights

  • While 11.8% of the respondents said they were likely to buy an EV in the next 12 months, another 79.0% said they were unlikely to do so. Those most likely to buy were: female, living in the northeast, and 25-34 years old.
  • The top three concerns about buying an EV were: too expensive (28.5%), vehicle range (18.6%), and not knowing enough about current EV models (16.3%).
  • More males (18.5%) than females (13.1%) said they were likely to ask their utility about EVs.
  • A review of findings from March to October 2021 revealed a slight increase in those likely to buy and EV from 11.3% in September to 11.8% in October, but still below the high of 15.2% in March. The top concern about purchasing an EV (too expensive) declined in percentage from 31.8% in September to 28.5% in October. And those likely to ask about EVs from their utility increased from 13.2% in August to 15.7% in October, but still below the high of 17.2% seen in June.
