Exacter, Inc along with Zpryme and the Rural Smart Grid Summit (RSGS) are pleased to release the results of an insightful Smart Grid survey focused on the innovation efforts of 73 U.S. rural cooperative utilities.

President of Exacter, Inc. Geoffrey Bibo says, “Successful Smart Grid deployments demand a highly reliable grid infrastructure.”

Key Findings:

  • Most utilities agreed AMI is the most important smart grid application (52%). However, distribution automation (37%), meter data management (34%), and advanced services (31%) all proved to have significant importance.
  • Cost continues to be a leading concern for smart grid efforts, but the challenges are more than financing, including finding the right business model to implement smart investments.
  • Many utilities use traditional forms of customer engagement, such as door hangers and paper bills, but are looking to engage customers using a wide variety of new technology (e.g., mobile apps and social media)
