Led by major utilities in California, such as Pacific Gas & Electric, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Southern California Edison, from 2007 to 2011, cumulative smart meter installations in the U.S. grew from 2.47 million to 37.29 million. In this report, Zpryme analyzed data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) to identify key smart meter deployment trends that are shaping broader smart grid deployments in the U.S. Using the historical data, along with major regional and utility smart meter deployment targets, Zpryme forecasts utility and total smart meters in the U.S. for 2012 and 2013.

The U.S. smart meter market still remains relatively hot and represents a strong market opportunity for smart meter and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) vendors. Although the pace of installations will taper off due to the completion of Smart Grid Investment Grant projects, about 60% of all U.S. electric meters will not have a smart meter by the end of 2013. Thus, utilities will further continue to deploy smart meters as part of larger grid modernization projects.

Key Findings

  • In 2011, 492 U.S. utilities had installed smart meters. By the end of 2013, Zpryme projects this figure to reach 559.
  • In 2011, a total of 37.29 million smart meters were installed in the U.S. By the end of 2013, Zpryme projects this figure to reach 61.77 million.
  • Of the total smart meters installed 2011, 9.2 million (25%) were part of U.S. Smart Grid Investment Grant projects.
  • In 2011, California accounted for 28% of smart meters in installed in the U.S.
  • In 2011, smart meters accounted for 14.1% (538,746 megawatt-hours) of all U.S. energy served in the U.S.
