The data and graphics in this report are from Zpryme’s monthly and quarterly consumer benchmarking surveys. Data is based upon a nationally representative survey sample of 1,000 U.S. adults (margin of error: +/- 3.5%).
Highlights
- Only 8.1% of the April sample said they were likely to buy an EV in the next 12 months. The most likely to buy an EV were male, living in the western U.S., and 55-64 years old.
- The top three major concerns about buying an EV were: too expensive (39.6%), vehicle range (16.0%), and not enough charging stations (13.7%).
- Just 10.3% said they would ask their utilities about EVs.
- A review of findings from March 2021 to April 2022 revealed a substantial drop in the number of potential buyers of EVs over the next 12 months (from 12.5% in March 2022 to 8.1% in April 2022). In fact, the current 8.1% is the lowest recorded over the past 14 months and most likely is a reflection of concern about the U.S. economy and expectations about the future. Being too expensive has remained the major concern about purchasing an EV over the past 14 months. The 10.3% of the sample (for April 2022) who would seek information about EVs from their utility is near the lowest observed (9.4% in February 2022) over the past 14-month time span.
