Summary

The purpose of this monthly report is to track consumer sentiment about the priority level utilities should be placing on climate change initiatives and clean energy program investments in wind, solar, and electric vehicles (EVs). The results of the analysis are presented by age, U.S. region, and gender. The data in this report was collected at the end of May 2022.

The data and graphics in this report are from Zpryme’s monthly and quarterly consumer benchmarking surveys. Data is based upon a nationally representative survey sample of 1,000 U.S. adults (margin of error: +/- 3.5%).

Highlights

  • Forty-nine-point nine percent of the overall sample said utilities should place a high priority on climate change, with the western region having the largest proportion (61.1%) who said high priority.
  • Over half (48.1%) said utilities should place a high priority on investing in renewable energy with the west, again, having the biggest percentage (57.6%) saying high priority.
  • A review of findings from March 2021 to May 2022 revealed that the May 2022 percentage of high priority for climate change (49.9%) was the highest observed for the past eight months, with the western region having the most saying high priority for 11 of the past 15 months. The percentage saying a high priority should be placed by utilities on renewable energy investing was the 2nd highest recorded (48.1%) over the past 15 months of data reporting. In 12 of 15 months, the west had the largest group of respondents who said a high priority for renewable energy investing.
