U.S. Battery Capacity and Projects Through October 2022

  • In October 2022, 8 operational battery projects were added in the U.S., accounting for an additional 678 MW of capacity. Compared to September, cumulative operational battery capacity increased by 9.9% in October.
  • As of October 2022, cumulative operational battery projects totaled 388 with a capacity of 7,512 MW.
  • Future planned capacity decreased by 55 MW in October 2022, reaching a total of 22,381 MW (vs 22,436 in September of 2022).
  • From January 2022 to October 2022, a total of 72 battery projects have been added in the U.S., accounting for an additional 2,942 MW of capacity.
  • Since January 2021, U.S. operational battery capacity has increased by 5,880 MW or 360%.
  • As of October 2022, 80.8% of battery capacity was owned by Non-CHP IPPs and 19.1% was owned by utilities.
  • In October 2022, the top 5 states ranked by battery capacity were California (4,125 MW), Texas (1,443 MW), Florida (528 MW), Massachusetts (202 MW), and Nevada (165 MW).
  • In October 2022, the top 5 battery project owners ranked by capacity were NextEra Energy (1,295 MW), LS Power (575 MW), Terra-Gen (547 MW), RE Crimson (350 MW), and Broad Reach Power (339 MW).
