Summary
The purpose of this monthly report is to track U.S. electric vehicle (EV) sales and EV charging station installation trends and growth. Level-1, Level-2, and DC-Fast charging stations are tracked in the report for the U.S. overall, by state, ownership type, charging network, and by facility type.

Analysis and data for this report is done by Zpryme using the U.S. Department of Energy and Argonne National Lab (ANL) EV data set and the U.S. Alternative Fuel Data Center electric vehicle charging station data set. Zpryme monthly tracking for U.S. EV sales started in January of 2021 and monthly tracking for EV charging stations started in July of 2021.
U.S. EV Sales
- For July 2021, EV sales reached 52,114, which represents a 5.0% increase over May 2021. On an annual basis, according to data from ANL, this represents an 84.1% increase compared to July 2020 EV sales (28,307).
- In July, PEVs accounted for 4.0% of all light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales. This figure is up 1.3 percentage points from January of 2021 (2.7%).
- Through July 2021, cumulative EV sales totaled 305,747 and overall EVs sold since 2010 increased by 2.6%, to 2.02 million. Year to date, 2021 total EV sales are up by 115% vs 2020.
- Through July, Tesla models have accounted for over a half (58.5%) of EV sales in 2021.
- In July, BEVs accounted for 67.6% of all PEVs sold (32.4% for PHEVs).
EV Charging Stations
- In July 2021, a total of 334 charging stations and 760 charging outlets were added in the U.S. The large majority (284) of the charging stations added were done by ChargePoint. Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Colorado added the most charging stations in July, with 41, 32, 29, and 29, respectively.
- Through July 2021, the U.S. had 46,998 EV charging stations and 120,260 charging outlets.
- Through July, there were a total of 19,171 DC-fast charging outlets, 97,873 level-2 outlets, and 3,216 level-1 outlets available.
- California (13,878), New York (2,749), and Florida (2,478), Texas (2,184), and Massachusetts (1,889) were the top 5 states with EV charging stations.
- Chargepoint and Tesla were the top two charging networks with 25,175 and 5,510 stations on their respective networks.
- The large majority of stations were privately owned (81.4%).
- The charging stations were most frequently installed at hotels (17.9%), car dealerships (16.9%), office buildings (6.4%), and federal government (5.6%) facilities.
