Net Metering, Green Pricing, and distributed and dispersed generation continue to see strong growth in the U.S. The growth shows that electric customers will continue to embrace new energy options as they relate to how they can use energy, and the type of energy they use.

In this analysis, Zpryme examines trends in Net Metering, Green Pricing, and distributed and dispersed generation to assess the early stages of this transformation.

Key Findings

  • From 2011 to 2012, the total number of Net Metering customers increased from 225,578 to 330,650 (47% increase). By 2014, Zpryme estimates that the total amount of Net Metering customers will reach 471,000.
  • In 2012, Pacific Gas & Electric (CA) had the largest number of Net Metering customers, with 77,905.
  • From 2011 to 2012, the number of Green Pricing customers increased from 1,278,984 to 2,265,962 (77% increase). By 2014, Zpryme estimates that the total number of Green Pricing customers will reach 2,950,000.
  • In 2012, Reliant Energy (TX) had the largest number of Green Pricing customers, with 716,668.
  • In 2012, distributed generation capacity in the U.S, among generators under 1MW, was 2,178 MW. This represents at 29% increase from 2011.
  • In 2012, dispersed generation capacity in the U.S, among generators under 1MW, was 3,266 MW. This represents at 9% increase from 2011.
