Summary
The purpose of this monthly report is to track U.S. electric vehicle (EV) sales and EV charging station installation trends and growth. Level-1, Level-2, and DC-Fast charging stations are tracked in the report for the U.S. overall, by state, ownership type, charging network, and by facility type.

Analysis and data for this report is done by Zpryme using the U.S. Department of Energy and Argonne National Lab (ANL) EV data set and the U.S. Alternative Fuel Data Center electric vehicle charging station data set. Zpryme monthly tracking for U.S. EV sales started in January of 202 and monthly tracking for EV charging stations started in April of 2021.
U.S. EV Sales
- For April 2021, EV sales reached 45,105, which represented a 2.1% decrease from March 2021. However, according to data from ANL, this represents an over 348% increase compared to April 2020 EV sales (10,073).
- In April, PEVs accounted for 3.0% of all light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales.
- Through April 2021, cumulative EV sales have totaled 150,233 and overall EVs sold since 2010 increased by 2.5%, to 1.86 million. Year to date, 2021 total EV sales are up by 87% vs 2020.
- Through April, Tesla models have accounted for over a half (53%) of EV sales in 2021.
- In April, BEVs accounted for 71.2% of all PEVs sold (28.8% for PHEVs).
EV Charging Stations
- Through April 2021, the U.S. had 45,495 EV charging stations and 116,238 charging outlets.
- Through April, there were a total of 18,132 DC-fast charging outlets, 94,778 level-2 outlets, and 3,328 level-1 outlets available.
- California (13,669), New York (2,626), and Florida (2,373), Texas (2,123), and Massachusetts (1,729) were the top 5 states with EV charging stations.
- Chargepoint and Tesla were the top two charging networks with 24,066 and 5,452 stations on their respective networks.
- The large majority of stations were privately owned (81.3%).
- The charging stations were most frequently installed at hotels (18.1%), car dealerships (17.2%), office buildings (6.4%), and federal government (5.7%) facilities.
