Volt-VAR control (VVC) is a fundamental operating requirement of all electric distribution systems. The prime purpose of VVC is to maintain acceptable voltage at all points along the distribution feeder under all loading conditions. Duke Energy, using Alstom’s Integrated Distribution Management System and VVC applications, has accomplished energy conservation through two percent voltage reduction of its Ohio service territory including over 500 circuits.

“As electric utilities like Duke Energy continue to strive to improve grid resilience and integrate more renewable and distributed energy resources, optimizing volt-VAR control is an effective means to monitor electric grid operations and improve overall grid efficiency,” said Steve Russell Duke Energy Project Director (Grid Modernization).

Join Steve Russell Duke Energy Project Director (Grid Modernization) and Ethan Boardman Alstom Grid Director (IDMS) who will explain the business drivers behind Duke Ohio’s integrated Volt/Var Optimization and Control program, the benefits, results and lessons learned.
