U.S. Battery Capacity and Projects Through August 2022
- In August 2022, 10 operational battery projects were added in the U.S., accounting for an additional 415 MW of capacity. Compared to July, cumulative operational battery capacity increased by 6.6% in August.
- As of August 2022, cumulative operational battery projects totaled 376 with a capacity of 6,702 MW.
- Future planned capacity increased by 5,879 MW in August 2022, reaching a total of 22,678 MW (vs 16,796 in July of 2022).
- From January 2022 to August 2022, a total of 60 battery projects have been added in the U.S., accounting for an additional 2,133 MW of capacity.
- Since January 2021, U.S. operational battery capacity has increased by 5,071 MW or 311%.
- As of August 2022, 80.8% of battery capacity was owned by Non-CHP IPPs and 19.1% was owned by utilities.
- In August 2022, the top 5 states ranked by battery capacity were California (3,629 MW), Texas (1,168 MW), Florida (520 MW), Massachusetts (196 MW), and Nevada (165 MW).
- In August 2022, the top 5 battery project owners ranked by capacity were NextEra Energy (1,295 MW), Terra-Gen (547 MW), LS Power (450.0 MW), Broad Reach Power (339 MW), and AES (327 MW).
